The long-missed 3D Doritos are coming back in 2021!
For those of us who are a little nostalgic about this crunchy snack, the news that the iconic 3D Doritos were getting revived is like a shot of adrenaline. You can get your hands on these tiny Doritos again, starting January 18 of next year!
Frito-Lay, the makers of Doritos, are bringing the OG 3D Doritos back in two new flavors: Spicy Ranch and Chili Cheese Nacho. It’s the company’s latest move to expand in the hot-and-spicy food category, which is one of the fastest growing segments for snacks.
These chips are shaped like triangles when they’re fried, but when you crunch them down they form a sizable hollow center. It’s a pretty cool concept and I love how it adds some variety to the classic Doritos Nacho Cheese wheelhouse without going too far.
The chips taste pretty much just as I’d expect: cheesy with a hint of tomato flavor and a slow-building, but still manageable spicy heat. It’s a great addition to my diet for those days when I need something a little different from the standard corn snacks.
In honor of the launch, Frito-Lay is partnering with original “Doritos Girl” Ali Landry to launch a nationwide challenge that pays homage to her 1998 laundromat commercial for the product. Fans are encouraged to catch Doritos 3D Crunch in their mouth as boldly as possible on TikTok with the #Doritos3DChallenge starting December 28.
I don’t think these are quite as cheesy as I expected, but they do have a nice texture and the usual airy crunch. They’re not quite as spicy as I would like, either, but they’re an improvement over regular Nacho Cheese Doritos. I don’t know if they could be made Flaming Hot, but I do hope they bring back the Jalapeno Cheddar flavor to satiate my cravings for spicy nacho cheese chips.
They’re also a little bit pork rind-like, which gives them a more airy and crispier texture than regular Doritos tortilla chips. They’re not quite as good as Bugles, but they’re still a decent snack.
Hopefully, they’ll add a Flaming Hot version in the future too!
This is the best news I’ve heard in a while. I’ve been a fan of Doritos for years, and I can’t wait to see them add this innovative, 3-D chip to their lineup. I’m sure it will be a big hit with their fans.
It’s not the first time that a Doritos has been revived, and it won’t be the last. In 2015, Frito-Lay relaunched Doritos Jacked in the shape of a football to celebrate the Super Bowl. This new snack was a huge success and helped to increase sales for Doritos overall.
The 3D shaped tortilla was only released in the 1990s, but it made a big name for itself and is considered by many to be one of the most innovative snacks that ever existed. It’s not a brand that I’d normally buy, but I can see how it could be a huge hit with the younger generation.
